Unlocking the Door to Shared Ownership

As a provider of affordable housing solutions across the North West, Torus is supporting the National Housing Federation’s latest campaign, Shared Ownership.

The trade body for housing associations across the country, the National Housing Federation helps shape national policy in order to fix the housing crisis and provide good quality, affordable homes for everyone. Their Shared Ownership campaign is working to increase awareness of shared ownership as a viable and accessible way for people to get onto the property ladder and work towards owning their own home.

Shared ownership (or part buy, part rent) is an affordable way to buy a home.  Simply put, you buy a share of a property, usually between 25% and 75%, and pay a reduced rent on the share you don’t own. This reduces your initial deposit and mortgage meaning you won’t overstretch yourself financially. Over time, you can then continue to buy shares to own your home outright.

As a group, Torus is passionate about giving local communities access to high quality, affordable homes across its heartlands of Liverpool, Warrington and St Helens. Ensuring a percentage of all homes are affordable, Torus has built multiple shared ownership schemes in the North West providing local people with the chance to own their own home.

Torus Homes have committed to building 1,800 homes by 2020 and are well on target to reach that goal. Integral to reaching this ambitious target is the creation of shared ownership properties across developments such as Kings Hill in Bromborough, Liberty Place in St Helens and Dover Meadows in Maghull as standard.

Jeanette Grady, Group Head of Sales, said: “We want to invest in our communities and give anyone who wishes to own a home, that opportunity, which is why we have partnered with the National Housing Federation on this campaign.

“We’re working with Shared Ownership to increase people’s awareness of this option and help more people get on the property ladder. Shared ownership gives people so many choices when it comes to home ownership and we have found that already our residents are enjoying the freedom shared ownership has given them.

“We will continue working with Shared Ownership to promote the benefits of the scheme to a wider audience and continue driving the development of high quality shared ownership properties across the North West in a bid to fix the housing crisis.”
